Sugrue South Downs
Sugrue South Downs is an award-winning boutique producer of English sparkling and still wines, founded by Dermot and Ana Sugrue. Established in 2006, the project began when Dermot, then head winemaker at Nyetimber, planted a vineyard at Storrington Priory. He later developed Wiston Estate, where he worked until 2022.
His debut wine, The Trouble With Dreams (2009), earned critical acclaim and helped build a cult following. In 2025, a magnum release was named one of the world’s top 50 wines and “Best in Show” at the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Ana joined full-time in 2021, bringing global winemaking experience. Together, they farm 12 hectares across five South Downs vineyards and opened their East Sussex winery to visitors in 2025.
Alongside their sparkling wines, they’ve released a celebrated solera Chardonnay, Bonkers, and a standout Pinot Noir, both praised as benchmarks for modern English winemaking.
