Meadowsweet Vodka Martini

Meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria, also known as mead wort, is a perennial herb in the family Rosaceae that grows throughout the water meadows at Thyme and is prolific in the English countryside.  Its heady floral smell is a perfect flavour for a Martini, we hope you enjoy this delicious addition to the cocktail menu in The Baa at Thyme.

Normally a martini glass would be washed with vermouth but for this aromatic creation our mixologist Charlotte uses Green Chartreuse Vegetal Elixir, this leaves an acidic note that balances the meadowsweet. She recommends using a really sharp vodka without too much nuance, again allowing the flavours of the meadowsweet to shine.

Ingredients

  • 4 drops of Green Chartreuse Vegetal Elixir (69%)

  • A handful of meadowsweet flowers

  • 2 shots Grey Goose vodka

  • 12.5ml Elderflower & Tarragon Liqueur (we make our own but you can replace this with a English vermouth)

Method

  1. Rinse your martini glass with Green Chatreuse

  2. Give your meadowsweet a good shake to remove any small insects

  3. Strip the flowers and muddle with a drop of hot water to bring out the flavour

  4. Add your alcohol and stir well with cubed ice

  5. Pour through a fine strainer into your glass

  6. Add a small fresh sprig of meadowsweet to garnish and inhale the scent as you sip.
