Historic Homes & Great Estates
Friday 29 January 2027: 10:00-14:30
Keeping History Relevant: The Future of Historic Homes
What does it mean to inherit, or take on the responsibility of, a great historic house today? And how can these places, shaped by centuries of history, remain relevant to contemporary life?
Hosted by Violet, Viscountess Garnock (née Manners), founder of HeritageXplore, this panel brings together women who are redefining what it means to be custodians of Britain’s heritage: the Duchess of Rutland of Belvoir Castle, Lady Ashcombe, Chatelaine of Sudeley Castle, and Caryn Hibbert, founder and owner of Thyme.
In conversation, they will share the stories behind their estates and the personal journeys of caring for them, from restoring buildings, gardens and landscapes and uncovering forgotten histories, to opening their doors to artists, designers, food and culture. Together, they have found imaginative ways to breathe new life into historic places without compromising the character and stories that make them unique.
The conversation will explore the balance between preservation and progress, and the determination, creativity and painstaking work required to secure these houses for future generations.
