The Art of Tablescaping

AT THYME

A beautifully laid table is a source of joy. It is a place to manifest your creativity, to play daringly with colours, and to create your own visual feast. The significance of table-laying has existed for the past two millennia, and while the ornaments have evolved (pottery to perspex, communal napkin to tablecloth) the purpose has remained the same, a catalyst for conversation and celebration.

A recent study has shown that setting your table with a tablecloth affects the way people taste the food they are eating. The use of colourful plates or glasses evokes a deeper appreciation for the flavours, while candles trigger a sense of relaxation and intimacy.

The sharing of food and the joy of entertaining is at the roots of Thyme, and stems from a ritual of family mealtimes and our appreciation for flavourful food. We are strong believers of a warm and jolly table settings, so here we share our top tips for transforming your table into a stage fit for a king.

1.     Don’t be scared of colours. Have the confidence to mix and contrast, celebrating tones that are bright and playful.

2.     A good tablecloth is a powerful conversation starter - choose one with an interesting pattern or origin.

3.     Play with rhythm and height by using candlesticks and vases.

4.     Coloured water glasses make for a more interesting table, while clear wine glasses are preferable.

5.     Linen napkins are a must, and patterns do a good job at masking any spillage of food!

6.     Invest in good quality cutlery - a silver cutlery set can be treasured for years and will last forever.

In our Bertioli by Thyme collection we bring the outside in. Through colourful linens, like wild chicory and buttercup we dress to the seasons and habitats around us. And just as nature has beauty in its wildness, so too does our tabletops.
