Founder Series: Hadeda's Kate Kindersley

Hadeda, named after the notorious South African bird well loved by locals for its loud bird-song, is a collective of unique home and lifestyle collections sourced from talented artisans and co-ops across many disciplines including fashion, ceramics, art, weaving, beading and carpentry from Africa and around the globe.

Founded by Kate Kindersley, who grew up between Africa and UK, Hadeda is informed by a belief in the enduring value of craft and design over mass production.

We are delighted to partner with Hadeda this festive season, with an African themed Christmas at Thyme telling the story of our 'Golden Thread' that links the wild spaces at Thyme to those of sub-Saharan Africa.

Where does your story and love affair with Africa begin?

My mother is South African and so we have always had a natural rhythm with Africa, its places and its people. My husband’s job took us to live in Tanzania, I was working in interiors and sourcing pieces for homes in the UK. I was so inspired by the level of craftsmanship, the artisans and their stories, and realised there was a gap in the market.

As you know, the migratory birdlife and wildlife conservation is so important to us here at Thyme, tell us more about your company name, Hadeda?

I was at home with two babies and Alex was travelling a lot and I could not get the idea out of my head. One day I was reading an African fable to my son about a South African bird called the Hadeda (pronounced haa-dee-dah). He could not stop saying it and in that moment I knew it was the name of the company I wanted to start. The Hadeda is a notorious South African bird know by locals for its very loud bird-song!

We are so excited to be working with you on some festive decorations, how will you start the creative process working with your incredible makers?

After living in Cape Town and Tanzania, I fell in love with the craftsmanship and exceptionally talented artisans I met along the way. From traditional techniques passed down through generations, to modern design, there are so many streams of talented designers in Africa. There are so many incredible people we work with that we will narrow down the specific talents relevant to the pieces we are going to create and take it from there, involving them in the design and creative journey.

As a brand co-founder, family-run business and a busy working mother we know just how busy you are but what’s your secret, how do you do it all? Can you share your key wellbeing rituals to keeping so many things bubbling away?

Maintaining my balance between my roles as a brand co-founder and a busy working mother requires dedication and effective wellbeing rituals. The support of my family has been instrumental in allowing me to manage these responsibilities seamlessly.

Getting outside and connecting with nature is another essential part of my wellbeing routine. Spending time outdoors rejuvenates my mind and body, helping me to recharge and gain fresh perspectives. One of my most cherished wellbeing rituals is practicing yoga. Yoga not only enhances my physical health but also cultivates mindfulness and inner peace. Engaging in regular yoga sessions helps me manage stress, improve my concentration, and maintain a positive outlook amidst a busy schedule.

What’s next for Hadeda?

We are just in the final stages of launching our Wholesale side of the business. We have exciting pop ups on the horizon for the remainder of the year and then after we are looking at expanding globally, watch this space!
